Giant Robo 2007 - Interview

Which is the first reasonable motivation to resort Giant Robo? It seems that 2007 will be the year of old-style robot anime return: even Tetsujin 28 is still in schedule to come in theatre...
Many of the recent robot animation focus on the design of the robot and heavy firearms such as beams, lasers, missiles. We wanted to change that by showing the real attractiveness the robot animation has, which is powerful battle of heavy metals striking each other. Since Mr. Mitsuteru Yokoyama is famous for creating fabulous robot animation such as "Gigantor," and we decided to revive "Giant Robo (GR)" with this concept since 2007 is the 40th anniversary of "Giant Robo."
The first thing that comes out is the new look of main characters and robots: why did you choose to renovate the visual graphic of Giant Robo?
At first it might look different from the original version, but the concept of the design of the robot is "How would it be like if Mr. Yokoyama Mitsuteru created Giant Robo in present time?" For us it is more like "reproducing" the Giant Robo in current era rather than completely remodeling the robot design.
Don't you think that that new look probably could disappoint the fans of old series, especially the fans of Mitsuteru Yokoyama (and all of us knowing how much devoted are the Otaku...)?
As we described in Question 2, we put the maximum effort to respect the concept of GR Mr.Yokoyama had. Therefore we believe we were able to keep the attractiveness of the original version of Giant Robo that has sophisticated form and profound style of robots. We believe that many of Mr. Yokoyama fan will understand such enthusiasm of the staff through our animaton.
But it's also true that Mitsuteru Yokoyama was happy of this new project and he agreed your production. Mitsuteru Yokoyama for all of us has been a column of manga industry, an unforgettable Maestro (in Japanese: Sensei), and he will miss very much: which is your best memories about him?
When Mr.Yokoyama was talking about his carrier as a cartoonist, he told us that he is attached to all of the characters he created, and all of his works are reflection of his own thoughts and feelings when he was creating them. We still remember his great smile when talking about it. Then we talked how interesting it would be if we made a story in the 21st century setting using the huge robots he has made in the past. This was also one of the reasons why we started this project. Although it is very unfortunate that Mr. Yokoyama could not see this animation, yet we proudly dedicate this animation to Mr.Yokoyama.
